However, it’s also very important to me to be present in my life, to improve myself, to go out and MEET the people I’ve connected with online and to expand my knowledge. I spend hours in games; how do I level myself up?

In this weekly series, I’ll chronicle how I’ve improved my “stats” with completely arbitrary scoring.*

+1 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
I learned a new city! I don’t know if there’s a city in the country more sprawling and intimidating than LA. Thanks to Glux, we figured our way around and learned A LOT about where to stay and what to do if we ever come back.

-3 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
Fail. I got major sunburn on my face and arms just from walking around LA. I picked up some SPF 100 on Day 3, but it was too late.

-2 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
I never work out on vacation. Packing extra shoes and a couple sets of workout clothes just seems ridiculous. I should really change this mentality though and keep up my momentum when I’m away.

+1 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
E3 was a major test of patience. Lines everywhere. Smelly gamer boys pushing and shoving through the crowds. Long days on my feet. But I rolled with it, stayed calm and had a great time.

+3 Luck – Something good that happened this week.
SO many good things happened! I got to play the new Smash Bros. Ultimate at E3. Dinosaur encounters peppered my week. My carney connections got me access to Universal Studios Hollywood with Express Pass so I could skip the 2 hour lines! We went early on Friday before the park got crowded and I finally got my Ravenclaw robes and a wand of Ivy, perfect for my magical outings!

-1 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I spent about what I thought I would on this trip. I’m not worried about money right now, but focus needs to shift back toward paying off my debts. This trip allowed me to hit the spend threshold on my Chase Sapphire Reserve card so I get 50k bonus points. That will pay for my next trip!

-2 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
Never never never book your seat toward the back of the plane. That’s where parents with infants book their seats. Ugh. Hard lesson learned!

+1 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
I always feel confident going out alone and traveling solo. In the last 24 hours everyone I’ve encountered in California has been shocked that I’m alone, but I feel like a real New Yorker and an independent woman. Feels nice, man.

-2 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
I was depressed and lazy all week. I could barely make it into work. News of two high profile suicides made me realize that depression isn’t a thing you ever “grow out of.” I’m going to have to fight this for the rest of my life. And I might lose. But I’m not going to let depression eat me alive without anyone knowing. I’m not hiding it. I’m not ashamed. I can’t help that my brain feeds itself lies about my amazing, creative, empathetic, curious, fierce self. I can see myself that way sometimes, but mostly I’m surprised when I hear how positively others view me. Almost can’t believe it. So I urge you- tell your friends and family you love them, but ALSO tell them how you see them. Are they brave? Inspirational? Funny? Witty? Creative? Powerful? Tell them. Because I don’t think ANY of us see ourselves the way the people who love us do. So it’s important to hear. Depression or not.

+1 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
I had a thought this week. So often when something small goes wrong, I hear people sarcastically say “story of my life.” But what if we flipped the script and said (or thought) “story of my life” every time something good or lucky or fabulous happened? Imagine how much more positive energy we could attract?

+3 Luck – Something good that happened this week.
I got invited to an advance screening of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on Tuesday. How amazing is that?!? Still can’t believe I got to be one of the first in NYC and maybe the world to see it. I’m not going to spoil anything… though I can’t wait to talk about it! I did write up some non-spoilery thoughts here.

+1 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
My mailbox surprised me with a check for $70 from some class action lawsuit! That’s the most I’ve ever gotten from one of those things, but it ALWAYS pays to throw your hat into the ring when you get those notices in your email. Just make sure it’s not spam first. They look spammy.

+1 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
I learned a very important lesson this week. There is an ATM in midtown that dispenses cupcakes. And cake is MY form of currency. Dreams do come true!

+1 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
Despite feeling antisocial, I was actually pretty personable and not awkward this week. I talked to my neighbors, the laundry man, ran into one of my Rover clients on a walk… I felt like Belle skipping through the village waving Bonjour to everyone.

-2 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
I left my Apple watch charger in PA, so I couldn’t track anything this week. Also I learned I’m much less motivated unless my watch is literally zapping me to get my ass moving. I miss it 😭

+1 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
I’ve been kind of depressed all week, but Glux came by my office to let me borrow her Rituals for Transformation book. I’m going to do all the things and write about them!

+1 Luck – Something good that happened this week.
A lot went wrong this week. My mentor left the company. I’ve had to overhaul the apartment to deal with clutter and repairs. I left my phone and watch chargers at my sister’s place. Ryan clogged the toilet and I had to… well I don’t want to talk about what I had to do. I fixed it. But I got some gorgeous flowers AND I beat the Champions’ Ballad DLC in Breath of the Wild.

-2 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I had a spend happy week. My apartment needs some new touches and I’m getting stir crazy. There’s only ONE outlet in my bedroom. How do they expect me to live? So I ordered some 5-sided outlets and other storage/organizational/streamlining things to get me though this final year in this place.

+4 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
My brother-in-law taught me how to play Zombie by The Cranberries on his guitar. Now I know my first song!

+1 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
My sister and I got our nails done on Friday before our brother’s wedding. Ignore my sudden stigmata. I went with a Barbie pink, inspired by the Tiny Shoulders documentary on Hulu.

+2 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
I mixed up the gym this week with stair walking at work. 9 floors is no joke. I’ve even inspired some coworkers to make the climb with me.

+3 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
On Wednesday I booked a crystal bed session at modrn sanctuary. This time I chose Third Eye frequencies and went into a meditation so deep, I felt like I left my body. I don’t know if I went into a past life or a future one. I don’t remember much of the visualizations now, but when the session was up, I felt my energy come crashing back into my body. I took a sharp gasping breath as if I hadn’t been breathing at all for the 45 minute session! It was strange but the balance I felt when I came back made me feel like a new person.

+1 Luck – Something good that happened this week.
I picked up a couple of crowlers at Victory Brewing, but the server filled one with the wrong beer so I got a third corrected crowler for free!


-3 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I booked my E3 trip for a week in Cali. First I fly into San Jose for two nights then I meet Glux in LA! It’s going to be an awesome trip, but it’s costing me. I hope these sapphire reserve points really do add up fast! It was amazing that my $300 annual travel credit was applied immediately though!

Learning an instrument is hard. I’m making slow, slow progress. My goal for next week is to learn one song so I have something to motivate me through boring scales and exercises.

The Skeevil Dead are BACK, baby! I’m putting together a new team to take to Nationals this year. Some familiar, some new. It’s going to be a strong summer league!

TWO Crystal Bed sessions coming up! I also switched therapists on TalkSpace and got a video session on the books. Hopefully this one goes better.

+1 Luck – Something good that happened this week
Free breakfast at work on Monday! Always a good way to start the week.

+2 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I got approved for a Chase Sapphire Reserve card. I get $300 in travel credits every year, access to VIP lounges at the airports and 3x the points on travel and dining. I’m just waiting for it to come so I can be smart about booking my flight and hotel. Time to make my trips work for ME.

-2 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
Aside from usual responsibilities and guitar lessons, I didn’t actively seek out any new learning. I spent all my free time reading and playing Splatoon.

-2 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
It was a lazy week. I didn’t even wash my hair ONCE. Luckily, curly hair tends to look better after 3-4 days of not washing it, but I stretched this mess like 5 days when it really should have been washed on day 4. I was just too tired to get up early enough.

-3 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
And too tired to get up early enough for the gym. I got my steps in, took the stairs and walked a couple subway stops more than I usually would to make up for it, but next week it’s 7am wake up call 4 days a week.

+3 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
I’ve been really good about keeping the peace around this week. My relationship with Ryan has been really great. When he’s in a bad mood, I’m learning how to give him the right kind of space and not engage in his nonsense.

+1 Luck – Something good that happened this week
A company from last week’s brand workshop sent me fancy ass chocolates and they’re so decadent I can’t even show you a picture because the craving for chocolate would burst your brain.

+2 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I hit the $1,000 milestone in my Stash account! Checking Stash daily is such an exciting part of my day. Seeing my stocks grow and comparing with Ryan’s investments (I ALWAYS beat his returns) gives me such a sense of pride and accomplishment. THIS is an adult thing! I highly, highly recommend signing up for an account – it’s a fun way to learn about investing and watch your money work for YOU. +4 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
NEW SUMMER WARDROBE! On Saturday post-brunch Glux and I went shopping! I got fresh work pants, new jeans and some summer tops for work as well as several new underthings 🤫

+5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
This deserves a +5! One of the elevators in my office building is being replaced, leaving hundreds of people to fight for space on ONE slow, rickety old elevator. The lines in the morning and around lunch are usually well out the front door! So I’ve been taking the stairs. Up NINE (9!) flights twice a day minimum. My ass looks incredible!

-3 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
For some reason, I’ve been attracting hostility ever since my weekend in Philly. Beggars and emotionally unstable strangers have been yelling at me everywhere I go. Sometimes it gets very aggressive and I’m afraid of being attacked. It’s super weird. Hopefully it ends soon.

+4 Luck – Something good that happened this week
On Wednesday, I thoughtlessly grabbed a birthday card and envelope at the Astor Place CVS. The next morning, I scratched my name and a quick note inside. When I picked up the envelope to stuff the card in, I discovered this unique photo by Fred Cray. Apparently he’s been hiding photos all over the world since 2008. I love how this city always surprises me with art!

ANDANDAND my man from Penn State Football Mr. Saquon Barkley was chosen in the #2 overall pick to play for my NEW YORK GIANTS! As I watched the news break on twitter I literally jumped up and down screaming until I collapsed on the floor crying. Ridiculous? Maybe. But I am SO happy for Saquon AND the Giants. He is going to be so much fun to watch as he advances in his career. Well deserved. After I peeled myself off the floor, I immediately pre-ordered his Giants gear. WE ARE!!!!

-2 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
Despite a load of birthday money coming in, I find that the older I get the more gift money becomes a reliance vs a fun thing. I had to book travel to my brother’s wedding, flights and hotel for E3, buy new clothes for the season AND enjoy an amazing beer brunch at Coney Island Brewery.

TODAY is my birthday! I’ve officially hit level 34. In addition to my #Rebirthday tasks, I get:

Wealth check – birthday money + make sure that 401k is on track

+2 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
I learned some valuable home improvement skills! Check out the before and after shots of the bathroom door a rover client destroyed. I’m ready for my own HGTV show!

+2 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
My family came up on Saturday so I had a lot of housekeeping to do. I made some repairs, threw out a ton of shit and really cleansed my tiny space. Additionally, I has a breakfast spread waiting for them when they arrived like Carney Fucking Homemaker of the Year. Look at me go!

+5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
I made it to the gym on Tuesday for a crushing workout, but next week I need to put in 4 days. It’s getting slightly less wintery out in NYC so I’ve been talking Muldoon for longer and longer walks again.

+2 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
I adorned my Passion Planner/Bullet Journal with an adorable enamel pin I found at The Strand. It’s a little fountain pen that says “mightier” in script – as in the pen is mightier than the sword. It’s a reminder that yes, words are powerful and this book is filled with power. But it’s also a mantra – I am mightier than I know. I am mightier than my thoughts.

+4 Luck – Something good that happened this week
On Wednesday, Spotify sponsored an extension of the David Bowie Is exhibit currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum. They decked out the Bleeker Street/ Broadway-Lafayette subway station (Bowie’s neighborhood stop) with photos, quotes and artwork from the Starman’s life. Some pieces have a Spotify code you can scan to hear his music. As part of the exhibit they made some limited edition metrocards available. There were 5 different Bowie metrocards and people were lining up for them. I managed to get one of the LAST full sets available before they ran out of Young Bowie!

ALSO- I scored an industry pass to E3 in June! Glux got a gamer pass and we’re making a girls trip out of our geeky week in LA.

+2 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I got a TWO HUNDRED DOLLAR TIP from my Rover client. That’ll go a long way to replacing the toilet seat his sweet but destructive pup ate.

+2 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
I learned not to take on puppies at Rover clients anymore 😂 The little lady I’m sitting now is a total sweetheart… who is quickly destroying my apartment! She’s eaten a pair of my jeans, 5 pairs of panties, 3 socks, the bathroom door, 1 bath towel, her own harness and the toilet seat😱 Looking forward to her going home tomorrow!

+2 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
Due to the aforementioned puppy eating my wardrobe, I had to really dress up for work this week. Stockings, dresses, heels… I looked like a different person to my colleagues.

+5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
Not only did I get back into my gym routine, I got back on my skates for the first time since I destroyed my back two years ago.It’s a tough workout, but I’d love to build back up and try out for the Gotham Girls roller derby again.

+3 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
After weeks of frustration and feeling like I was in a constant state of panic attackI decided I needed someone to talk to. However, finding a therapist in NYC is o-v-e-r-w-h-e-l-m-i-n-g. So I signed up for TalkSpace. Now I have a therapist I can text any time with any thought. It’s only been half a week, but I’ll let you know how it goes.

+3 Luck – Something good that happened this week
I went for a walk through Washington Square Park and found a photo taped to a tree. I picked it up and it directed me to the nearby Lomography store where I traded it for the item IN the photo – an accordion-style photo album perfect for my Instax and Holga photos 💕 It pays to keep your head up and your phone down while exploring the world.

+1 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I scored a $50 Amazon credit for signing up for MealPal a couple months ago with a friend’s referral code. Maybe I can use it to replace what the puppy has devoured.

+2 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
I’ve been expanding my DnD knowledge by listening to The Adventure Zone podcast. It’s helping me learn the language and understand the breadth of gameplay possibilities. Last week, I created a tiefling rogue called Alaria for a one-shot game. This week we start our first full campaign.

-1 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
Every morning while making my coffee at work, I somehow drop a paper strip from the sugar packet into my cup. Despite the fact that I don’t (think) I’m tearing it open completely because I don’t use all the sugar, I pour my creamer in to discover a floating triangle of paper. I have to awkwardly fish it out in front of anyone who happens to be in the kitchen. This has happened every day this week. 🤦🏻‍♀️

+5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
Yesterday I ran the Hot Chocolate 15k in Philly with my sister. This was my 5th 15k and my 4th Hot Chocolate in Philly. I was really unprepared for it and hadn’t trained at all, but it was a great motivator to get my ass back into shape. I earned TWO medals – my finisher chocolate AND a retroactive 3rd year medal!

+2 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
My mom, my sister and I started a gratitude group text. Each morning we text each other something we’re grateful for to start our days on a positive note. I love this because they both wake up much earlier than I do so I get to wake up to a string of positivity and the knowledge that the people I love most are happy.

+3 Luck – Something good that happened this week
I got a super sweet surprise package from my longest-standing friend. Liz sent me a Rebel Tarot deck of oracle cards that don’t give a flying fuck about my feelings. I love it because this is exactly the kind of thing we would have had in high school when we first started exploring our witchiness. Answers with attitude.

+1 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
Quarterly update: I’m a little bit ahead of my 2018 savings goal! It feels really good to stick to this and not fall behind for once. I’m thinking about breaking this goal into pieces and shoving that money into my high yield savings or Stash. Otherwise it’s just sitting in this goal not doing anything. BUT it’ll feel so satisfying to see that 5k mark hit all at once and then move a chunk of money into savings.
