Since my family first got an NES, I’ve had a controller in my hands. Exploring new worlds, meeting new characters and experiencing stories… in some ways, I’ve just connected better with the world through games. However, it’s also very important to me to be present in my life, to improve myself, to go out and MEET the people I’ve connected with online and to expand my knowledge. I spend hours in games; how do I level myself up?

In this weekly series, I’ll chronicle how I’ve improved my “stats” with completely arbitrary scoring.*

+2 Intelligence – How did I make myself a little smarter? What did I learn?
I learned not to take on puppies at Rover clients anymore 😂 The little lady I’m sitting now is a total sweetheart… who is quickly destroying my apartment! She’s eaten a pair of my jeans, 5 pairs of panties, 3 socks, the bathroom door, 1 bath towel, her own harness and the toilet seat😱 Looking forward to her going home tomorrow!

+2 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
Due to the aforementioned puppy eating my wardrobe, I had to really dress up for work this week. Stockings, dresses, heels… I looked like a different person to my colleagues.

+5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
Not only did I get back into my gym routine, I got back on my skates for the first time since I destroyed my back two years ago. It’s a tough workout, but I’d love to build back up and try out for the Gotham Girls roller derby again.

+3 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
After weeks of frustration and feeling like I was in a constant state of panic attackI decided I needed someone to talk to. However, finding a therapist in NYC is o-v-e-r-w-h-e-l-m-i-n-g. So I signed up for TalkSpace. Now I have a therapist I can text any time with any thought. It’s only been half a week, but I’ll let you know how it goes.

+3 Luck – Something good that happened this week
I went for a walk through Washington Square Park and found a photo taped to a tree. I picked it up and it directed me to the nearby Lomography store where I traded it for the item IN the photo – an accordion-style photo album perfect for my Instax and Holga photos 💕 It pays to keep your head up and your phone down while exploring the world.

+1 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I scored a $50 Amazon credit for signing up for MealPal a couple months ago with a friend’s referral code. Maybe I can use it to replace what the puppy has devoured.

I’ve been expanding my DnD knowledge by listening to The Adventure Zone podcast. It’s helping me learn the language and understand the breadth of gameplay possibilities. Last week, I created a tiefling rogue called Alaria for a one-shot game. This week we start our first full campaign.

-1 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
Every morning while making my coffee at work, I somehow drop a paper strip from the sugar packet into my cup. Despite the fact that I don’t (think) I’m tearing it open completely because I don’t use all the sugar, I pour my creamer in to discover a floating triangle of paper. I have to awkwardly fish it out in front of anyone who happens to be in the kitchen. This has happened every day this week. 🤦🏻‍♀️

+5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
Yesterday I ran the Hot Chocolate 15k in Philly with my sister. This was my 5th 15k and my 4th Hot Chocolate in Philly. I was really unprepared for it and hadn’t trained at all, but it was a great motivator to get my ass back into shape. I earned TWO medals – my finisher chocolate AND a retroactive 3rd year medal!

+2 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
My mom, my sister and I started a gratitude group text. Each morning we text each other something we’re grateful for to start our days on a positive note. I love this because they both wake up much earlier than I do so I get to wake up to a string of positivity and the knowledge that the people I love most are happy.

+3 Luck – Something good that happened this week
I got a super sweet surprise package from my longest-standing friend. Liz sent me a Rebel Tarot deck of oracle cards that don’t give a flying fuck about my feelings. I love it because this is exactly the kind of thing we would have had in high school when we first started exploring our witchiness. Answers with attitude.

+1 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
Quarterly update: I’m a little bit ahead of my 2018 savings goal! It feels really good to stick to this and not fall behind for once. I’m thinking about breaking this goal into pieces and shoving that money into my high yield savings or Stash. Otherwise it’s just sitting in this goal not doing anything. BUT it’ll feel so satisfying to see that 5k mark hit all at once and then move a chunk of money into savings.

Hard to follow last week’s brain-fest at Think 2018, but I did start learning how to play DnD. Glux and I met up at The Uncommons where Steven (our DM) helped us pick out our first set of dice! I chose a black and gold set to match my character’s gold eyes and shadowy nature. She’s a tiefling rogue named Alaria and you can read her story here. Aren’t my dice pretty? That’s a natural 20 by the way😜

We all know how bad I am at wearing jewelry, but I got this gold and hematite bracelet in Vegas and I’ve worn it every single day! I love the way the natural layers with the tech of my watch. I guess gold and black are kind of my colors lately (see dice 👆🏻)

-5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
I have no excuses. It was a bad week for workouts. I have a 15k run next weekend and I am horribly under prepared.

+2 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
I cleansed the apartment with palo santo to boot the negative energy that tends to build up in the storm cloud over Ryan’s head. We didn’t fight for a whole 4 days after that! Maybe I should just keep some burning all the time? *hits Amazon for incense*

+1 Luck – Something good that happened this week
I won the TodayTix lottery for Jerry Springer – The Opera. It was an absolutely hysterical trek back into the 90s! You should go just to hear Tiffany Mann sing. Incredible. It was about 30 minutes too long, and I could have done without Jerry’s entire storyline. If it was just a few hilarious show segments, that would have been perfect. But the storyline made it an opera. Anyway. I loved it.

+1 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
My savings are still on track, but I could do a lot better. I’m thinking of going back into no-spend mode for this, the month of my birth. What could be a better gift to myself than more money?

Ugly Delicious on Netflix taught me so much about food and cultural perspectives (and I’m pretty sure it made Ryan think too!). I have to admit, I’d never questioned the American cultural status of Chinese food. David Chang (of Momofuku fame) pointed out that while it deserves the same consideration as French or Italian cuisines, it’s widely perceived as “cheap” and “dirty.” That was eye opening. I realized I’ve also considered Chinese food to be a cheap and “lesser” category of food. I don’t know the difference between regional flavors and styles. Though I always make an effort to experience and appreciate other cultures, it’s always a humbling reminder of my white privilege when these perspectives and perceptions smack me in the head. I’m grateful for shows like this that make me reflect and understand. I highly recommend everyone check it out.

+1 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
Our Boss’s Boss’s Boss was in the office this week and I made sure to get a little face time in with her. There were a lot of people clamoring for her attention, but I stepped up and asked her some good questions during her Office Hours.

-5 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
It was a failed week at the gym. I didn’t make it once. Couldn’t sleep. Super emotional. Lots of crying. But I’m blasting this trend on Monday. I’ll never be ready for my race in April if I don’t get back into a solid routine NOW.

+2 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
My Discipline moved to a beautiful, bright new space this week. It’s not without its glitches, but it’s a massive improvement over our last floor. A lot of coworkers have been complaining about it though. So I’ve started pointing out something great for every complaint they have. “These pillars disrupt the room”: “We can wrap them in streamers and post up artwork!” “It’s going to be too crowded.”: “Let’s enjoy the quiet before we enjoy collaborating with everone else when they move in.” It’s all how you frame it. If you look for misery, you’ll always find it. If you look for the good, you will always find it.

I love my Passion Planner Eco, but when I close it the sleeve doesn’t quite fit right. The front of my poor bujo is bent in all manner from trying to wiggle and force it to close properly. I guess several buyers write a note to PP because they reached out offering a refund or replacement of my choice while they discontinue the Eco planner until it’s perfected. So now I’ll have a gorgeous Cosmic Rose Gold undated planner to map out 2019!

+5 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned before, but I dog sit through Rover.com. I figured I already have a dog so what’s one more? Why not get paid for Muldoon to have an occasional sleepover? Last year I made over $3,000 for hanging out with cool ass pups. This week I booked a new client for TWO AND A HALF WEEKS! AND she’s a puppy so I get my puppy rate. By this time last year, I hadn’t had a single booking yet and I only gained 2 new clients for all of 2017 (my regulars were super active though!). After this new booking, I’ll have already made 1/3 of my profits from 2017 and booked THREE new clients! It’s shaping up to be a lucrative year!

I attended a lecture by Jon Iwata where he spoke about practicing set theory. Set theory at its essence is simply grouping things together and looking for similarities. What I love about this is that it forces you to stretch your mind and look at things from different angles. As Mr. Iwata said “You might surprise yourself with what you see.”

+3 Charisma – How was I less awkward or more beautiful?
I’m speaking with confidence again. I’m sharing my thoughts and ideas at work and spinning my unique perspective into challenges and thought-provoking pieces. I can see people thinking, lighting up, building on my ideas and I’m so excited that the silence curse has ended!

-3 Strength – New workouts, breakthroughs, challenges.
I still didn’t make it to the gym this week. Part of it was my back not being fully ready, but most of it was laziness. I’m having a hard time getting up in the mornings. This kills me because I’ve always been the kind of person whose feet hit the floor the second her alarm goes off in the morning, ready to take on the day.

After crossing out GYM in my planner for the 6th time, I circled it and wrote “let’s DO something about this.” And I thought about the factors leading me to snooze. Tired. Trouble falling asleep. Ryan snores. Alarm sound gives me anxiety. Ryan flails in his sleep. Drinking a beer before bed. Ryan snores WHILE flailing in his sleep. From there, I came up a strategy to change the factors I can control.

Operation Motivation:

  • Change alarm sound to one you haven’t heard every morning for 2 years.
  • Sleep meds by 10pm
  • Don’t drink on weeknights!
  • Envision yourself strong and confident
  • Think of how GOOD and ENERGIZED you feel afterwards

+2 Defense – Where did I consciously avoid or deflect negative energy?
For the last couple of weeks, I’ve had a lot of trouble falling asleep. I’ll feel exhausted, but the second I get horizontal, my mind starts racing with negative or anxious thoughts. Thoughts are a choice though and when this happens, I can choose to change my thoughts. Finding one to focus deeply on has proven more challenging. Thinking of my financial goals this year, I came up with a super powerful and positive scene to envision. In it, I’m luxuriating in a big claw-foot bathtub filled to the brim with hundred dollar bills. I’m throwing them in the air like bubbles. I’m massaging them into my curls like conditioner. I’m sinking into the musty metallic scent like oils. It’s a fabulous fantasy to fall asleep to as well as a way to help manifest my money goals🙌🏻

+2 Luck – Something good that happened this week
The WeWork space I work at stocks the fridge with free Marve juices. I quickly got addicted to the Intense Yellow juice which is a mix of lemon, cayenne and maple. Yum! Thursday afternoon when I went down to the kitchen, they were all gone. An awesome WeWork Community Manager saw my sad face and he delivered one right to my desk! Booyah! WeWork rocks.

+5 Wealth – How did I save towards my goals?
This was week 1 of #nospendfeb. Before the start of the month, I laid out my strategy in 3 core steps:

  • Set up monthly Game-changer and associated tasks to help stay on track.💸
  • Created a Goal in my Simple account to save $1,000 this month (which is roughly what I spent frivolously last month 😱). Auto-save: $33.33/day.
  • Informed my friends of my #nospendfeb challenge for support and understanding when I turn down invites.😇

Here’s my #NoSpendFeb all mapped out in my Passion Planner

I’m taking this very seriously. See where my map says “Hide credit card” in the top left? Well last Sunday evening, Ryan and I went out on the town and in a drunken state I *think* I hid my credit card from myself… because I cannot find it ANYWHERE.😂 Come March 1st, I’m going to have to call Chase and request a new card! (Top score of 5 for committing so hard I actually can’t find my card.)
